Crown Equipment Integrates Dynamic Fork-Scale Telemetry for Cold Storage

Jun 16, 2026

Crown Equipment has rolled out a highly specialized integrated fork scale system for its RC 5500 series stand-up counterbalance forklifts, specifically engineered to solve a persistent logistics problem in automated cold storage facilities. In sub-zero environments, operators frequently load pallets onto high-density mobile racking systems. If a pallet exceeds the rack's weight capacity, it can cause catastrophic structural failure, but traditional floor scales require the operator to make an extra stop, exposing the load to temperature fluctuations and slowing throughput.

Crown's new system embeds high-precision strain gauges directly into the heel of the solid-steel fork carriage, rather than using bulky external load cells that reduce the usable fork length. As the operator slides the forks into a pallet and tilts back, the gauges measure the micro-deflection of the steel, calculating the load weight to an accuracy of plus or minus 0.5% of the rated capacity. The weight data is processed instantly and displayed on the dashboard monitor.

The true innovation, however, is the telemetry integration. The forklift's onboard controller cross-references the measured pallet weight with the warehouse management system (WMS) via a wireless link. If the operator attempts to place a 2,500-pound pallet into a rack zone rated for only 2,000 pounds, the system automatically limits the hoist height and triggers a visual alarm, physically preventing the overload.

Engineering the system for the cold chain presented unique challenges. Condensation and ice buildup on traditional load-cell cables cause erratic readings and short circuits. Crown solved this by routing the strain gauge wiring through a sealed, heated conduit inside the fork mast, ensuring the electrical resistance remains constant even in -30°C environments. By turning the forks into an active weighing instrument that communicates with the broader facility infrastructure, Crown is eliminating the risk of rack collapses while maintaining the breakneck pace required in modern cold chain logistics.
