Curing “Slow Cold Operation” And “Arm Chatter” On A Kobelco SK300LC-10 Excavator

Aug 30, 2026

A pipeline contractor reported that a Kobelco SK300LC-10 excavator operated normally when warmed up, but during the first 30 minutes of a cold morning shift, all hydraulic functions were painfully slow. When trying to curl the bucket or move the arm, the movements "chattered" (jumped erratically) rather than moving smoothly.

The technician checked the main pump pressure cold. The pressure reached 340 bar, but the flow was exceptionally low. He felt the main pump casing; it was abnormally hot, even though the machine had only been running for 15 minutes. He removed the "Main Pump Regulator" housing to inspect the "Cut-off Valve" (a valve that limits maximum pump flow when system pressure spikes). The cut-off valve spool was seized in the "Low-Flow" position by a buildup of hard, amber-colored varnish.

When cold, the oil was thick, and the seized valve prevented the pump from stroking to maximum displacement. As the oil heated up, the oil thinned, allowing the hydraulic force to overcome the varnish resistance and stroke the pump, restoring normal speed.

The varnish buildup and cold sluggishness were exacerbated by the oil type. The technician pulled a sample; the oil was exceptionally dark and sticky. A lab test confirmed the oil was an ISO 100 viscosity grade (summer gear oil), whereas this machine requires ISO 46 anti-wear hydraulic oil. The thick, incorrect oil caused severe cavitation on the pump inlet during cold starts, generating heat and stripping the lubricating film from the regulator spools, leading to varnish deposition and the chattering symptoms.

The repair involved removing and cleaning the main pump regulator assembly, freeing the cut-off valve spool with fine lapping compound. The entire hydraulic system was flushed with a solvent flush, and fresh ISO 46 hydraulic oil was installed. After the repair, the excavator operated smoothly and at full speed even at -5°C ambient temperature.
