Curing “Swing Brake Refuses To Release And Pump Cavitates” On A Hyundai Robex 365LC-9 Excavator

Sep 14, 2026

A road construction crew reported that a Hyundai Robex 365LC-9 excavator would not swing left or right. When the operator moved the swing joystick, the main hydraulic pump emitted a loud, high-pitched whine, and the engine RPM dropped drastically, but the upper house did not move.

The technician first checked the main swing control valve and confirmed the spool was moving. He then focused on the "Swing Parking Brake." Large excavators use a spring-applied, hydraulically released multi-disc parking brake on the swing motor. To swing, the pilot pressure must trigger the brake release solenoid to relieve spring pressure.

He disconnected the swing brake release solenoid and found it was stuck in the energized position. The solenoid coil was receiving constant 12V from the controller, even when the joystick was in neutral. The controller relies on a "Swing Pilot Pressure Sensor" to detect when the joystick is moved before commanding the brake to release. Upon inspection, the three-pin connector for the swing pilot pressure sensor was packed with green corrosion from years of mud and pressure washing. The corrosion created a short circuit, sending a constant false 5V signal to the ECU. The ECU, thinking the operator was constantly demanding swing, kept the parking brake solenoid energized.

Because the brake was never released, the swing motor was mechanically locked. When the operator moved the swing joystick, the main pump forced maximum flow against the locked motor, popping the main relief valve and creating the high-pitched whine and engine lug-down. The constant pressure had also burnt the swing brake discs, fusing them together, which is why the house still wouldn't move even after the solenoid was manually disconnected.

The repair involved replacing the corroded pilot pressure sensor and its wiring pigtail, applying dielectric grease to the new connector. The swing motor was removed and disassembled, and the fused brake discs were separated and replaced. The hydraulic system was flushed. Post-repair, the swing released and operated smoothly, with no pump cavitation or engine lug-down.
