A logistics warehouse reported that a Linde E16 electric forklift would suddenly lose drive power while traveling. The machine would coast to a stop, and the dashboard would display a "Check Motor" error code. The operator could turn the key off and on to reset the fault, but it would happen again randomly, usually after hitting a bump.
The technician connected the Linde diagnostic software and retrieved fault code "E-233: Traction Motor Encoder Signal Loss." This code indicates that the controller is not receiving a speed signal from the motor, so it shuts down to prevent a runaway condition. The speed sensor is located on the non-drive end of the traction motor, connected via a multi-pin plug.
The technician inspected the motor connector. The plastic housing was brittle, and the locking tab was broken. When he wiggled the harness, the connection felt loose. He unplugged the connector and found the pins were covered in a blue/green corrosion residue. The warehouse environment was humid, and the lack of a locking tab had allowed moisture to enter the connection.
He used a contact cleaner and a small wire brush to clean the pins. The speed sensor itself was also tested. It was a Hall-effect sensor. The resistance reading was slightly out of spec, suggesting internal wear from voltage spikes caused by the poor connection.
The repair involved replacing the entire connector housing with a new, IP67-rated sealed connector and replacing the speed sensor. The pins were treated with a conductive grease to prevent future corrosion. After the repair, the forklift ran smoothly for an 8-hour shift without any power interruptions or error codes. The intermittent connection issue was permanently resolved.
