Fixing “Steering Wheel Stiffness” And “Motor Cut-Out” On A Jungheinrich ETV 216 Reach Truck

A logistics warehouse reported that a Jungheinrich ETV 216 reach truck's steering wheel would suddenly become stiff, and the drive motor would cut power. The fault code "E-501" (Steering System Fault) was displayed.

The technician noted that the ETV 216 uses an "Electronic Steering System" (EPS). A steering wheel angle sensor sends a signal to the EPS controller, which drives an electric motor on the rear axle. The drive motor cut-out was a safety feature triggered by the steering fault.

He connected the Jungheinrich "ServicePro" diagnostic tool. The live data showed that the "Steering Wheel Angle" signal was erratic, jumping between 0 and 360 degrees even when the wheel was stationary. This erratic signal confused the controller, which disabled the drive motor to prevent an uncontrolled turn.

He removed the steering column cover. The "Hall-Effect Angle Sensor" was visibly damaged. A small screw from the steering shaft assembly had come loose and lodged between the sensor magnet and the sensor chip, scratching the chip surface and causing a short circuit. The short circuit caused the "5V Reference Voltage" of the entire controller to drop, triggering the safety lockout.

Additionally, the "High-Voltage Connector" (for the drive battery) showed signs of green corrosion on the pins. This corrosion increased contact resistance. When the drive motor tried to draw high current during a turn, the voltage drop at the connector triggered a "Low Voltage" fault, contributing to the cut-out.

The repair involved replacing the steering angle sensor and tightening the steering shaft screws with thread-locking compound. The high-voltage connector pins were cleaned with contact cleaner and treated with conductive grease. After clearing the fault codes, the steering became smooth, and the motor cut-out issue was resolved.
