How Important Is Forklift Visibility?

Mar 14, 2022

The reduction of the observable range (visibility) of forklift drivers will endanger the operation ability of forklift drivers and the safety of working environment. Choosing a forklift that can maximize visibility can also optimize the ability of forklift drivers to operate safely and accurately. When purchasing a forklift, the visual range of the forklift gantry affects the observable range of the forklift driver, which is a major consideration. Recent research on operators and companies across Europe shows that this is the most important factor in deciding which type of forklift to buy.

Therefore, visibility, together with forklift stability and reliability, is at the top of the priority list, far higher than the operating cost variable.

The reason is obvious

Visibility is the vast majority of information that forklift drivers need to find and perceive goods and complete handling tasks.

If there is no good observation range, 80% of the operations are prone to accidents. This is especially true when forklifts lift goods at a height of more than three to four meters or more. If you can not fully control what is happening, operators will face real risks.

A security issue

According to statistics, two thirds of forklift accidents cause death or injury to pedestrians or bystanders. This means that the lack of visibility of forklift drivers will have serious consequences for their surrounding environment. Collapsed cargo is one of the main causes of fatal forklift accidents. If you are lucky, it will often cause injuries requiring hospitalization. Every workplace tragedy carries a human and business burden. This is why popularity in the industry can only be a basic requirement.

Generally, operators are protected from falling objects by metal strips on the cab ceiling. However, although these structures are an effective barrier for large objects, they are not for smaller objects.

When visibility decreases

When visibility is reduced, forklift operators usually work in reverse. Although this can immediately solve the operation problem, the reverse operation forces the operator to turn his neck and shoulders, keeping one foot on the pedal and one hand on the steering wheel. This is a forced action that can cause serious short-term and long-term neck and shoulder injuries. It is not unreasonable that one of the occupational diseases most frequently reported by Italy's National Institute of accident insurance (INAIL) involves the spine, neck and back.

So what can be done? Rotating seats can minimize this risk by encouraging correct posture and relieving tension in the shoulders, neck and back. There is a handle with built-in horn on the back of the high-altitude guardrail, which often helps the operator press the warning device.

Choosing forklifts with good visibility can improve the safety level and the productivity of enterprises. Therefore, if coupled with the reduction of no small products and vehicles, the benefits are double or even triple.
