Jungheinrich AG has launched its new EFG 425-435k series 80-volt electric counterbalance forklifts, featuring an integrated lithium-ion power architecture and advanced fleet telematics designed for multi-shift warehousing and manufacturing operations. Traditional lead-acid electric forklifts require a dedicated battery-charging room, a trained battery-change crew, and up to 20 minutes of downtime per shift for battery swap-factors that have historically limited electric forklift adoption in heavy-duty, multi-shift applications where internal combustion forklifts dominated. The EFG 425-435k series directly addresses these limitations.
The truck is powered by a "Modular 80-Volt Lithium-Ion Battery Pack" comprising up to four individually hot-swappable battery cartridges mounted in the counterweight compartment. Each cartridge weighs 120 kilograms and can be extracted and replaced through a roll-out drawer mechanism in under 3 minutes by a single operator, without lifting equipment. The modular architecture allows the operator to swap only the depleted cartridges rather than the entire pack, maximizing the utilization of the fleet's battery inventory.
The engineering innovation is the "Adaptive Energy Recovery System." During lift-lowering cycles, the "Regenerative Hydraulic Circuit" routes the oil displaced from the lift cylinder's rod end through a hydraulic motor-generator, converting the load's potential energy back into electrical energy and returning up to 20 percent of the battery's charge during a full shift. Furthermore, during braking, the traction motor operates as a generator, capturing the truck's kinetic energy and feeding it back into the lithium pack. The "Predictive Energy Management System" monitors the truck's upcoming tasks based on its warehouse management system work queue; if the system detects a series of heavy lifts approaching, it proactively reserves battery capacity by temporarily reducing auxiliary loads (such as cabin heating or fan speed) during light-duty travel. This predictive energy management, combined with the regenerative circuits, delivers a full eight-hour shift on a single charge even in heavy-duty 3.5-ton pallet handling, and eliminates the mid-shift battery change cycles that previously consumed 15 percent of the operational shift time.
