Safety gloves are subjected to extreme daily stress, including cuts, abrasions, chemicals, oil, dirt, and repeated bending. Without proper care, even heavy-duty gloves can deteriorate quickly, leading to discomfort, reduced grip, and complete failure when protection is needed most. Establishing a simple maintenance routine can significantly extend their lifespan and ensure reliable hand safety.

After each use, gloves should be cleaned to remove concrete dust, cement splatters, oil, grease, and other industrial contaminants. For coated work gloves, rinse off excess dirt under running water and use mild soap if necessary. Avoid using harsh solvents or degreasers unless the manufacturer specifically approves them, as these can break down rubber, nitrile, or leather coatings. After cleaning, gently squeeze out excess water without twisting or wringing, which can cause the lining to shift or the outer layer to crack.

Drying should take place in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, radiators, engines, and other heat sources. High heat causes rubber to harden, leather to shrink and crack, and fabric linings to lose their shape. Gloves should be left to air dry naturally, with fingers positioned straight to maintain flexibility. Placing wet gloves near open flames or hot equipment not only damages the material but also creates a fire risk.

Regular inspection is essential. Before each use, check the palm and fingers for cuts, holes, worn patches, or peeling coating. Even small defects can expose hands to sharp objects, rough surfaces, or chemicals. Inspect the wrist closure and stitching; loose threads or separated seams mean the glove no longer provides a secure fit. For cut-resistant gloves, look for frayed or broken fibers, as these reduce level of protection.

Storage also affects durability. Gloves should be kept in a clean, dry area away from sharp tools, metal edges, and chemical containers. Hanging gloves or placing them in a dedicated pouch prevents unnecessary rubbing and tearing. Avoid leaving gloves on the ground or in dusty corners, where they can accumulate abrasive particles that accelerate wear.

Eventually, all safety gloves must be replaced. Signs that replacement is necessary include significant loss of grip, persistent stiffness, holes that cannot be repaired, and visible deterioration of the protective layer. Continuing to use worn gloves puts workers at risk of cuts, burns, blisters, and long-term skin damage.

By cleaning, inspecting, drying, and storing safety gloves properly, companies reduce replacement costs and ensure that workers always have dependable hand protection. Well-maintained gloves improve grip, reduce fatigue, and create a safer, more productive work environment.
