Resolving “Slipping in First Gear” And “Whining Deceleration” On A John Deere 644L Wheel Loader

Aug 28, 2026

An aggregate yard operator reported that a John Deere 644L wheel loader slipped badly when shifting into First gear under load. When the operator released the accelerator to stop, the machine made a high-pitched whining noise, and the transmission temperature was running 20 degrees higher than normal.

The technician first checked the transmission oil level and condition. The oil was at the correct level but had a dark, burnt odor. He connected the Service Advisor diagnostic tool and found a "Low Line Pressure" warning. He connected a pressure gauge to the forward clutch test port. In First gear, the pressure fluctuated wildly between 8 bar and 15 bar (specification is a steady 20 bar), indicating clutch slippage or a hydraulic leak.

Suspecting the clutch seals were worn, he removed the transmission valve body. The seals were intact, but the "Modulation Solenoid" screen was packed with fine metallic debris and friction material. To find the source of the heat and debris, he traced the transmission cooler lines. The "Transmission Oil Cooler" (mounted in front of the radiator) had its external fins completely plastered with a thick layer of concrete dust and limestone mud. The blocked cooler prevented heat dissipation and, more importantly, restricted the flow of lubricating oil to the torque converter.

Due to the poor lubrication, the "Stator Spline" inside the torque converter had partially stripped. The loose stator allowed the converter to "freewheel" slightly, reducing torque multiplication and causing the slippage in First gear. The whining noise was the transmission pump starving for fluid due to the restricted cooler return line.

The repair involved removing and flushing the transmission oil cooler, rodding out the internal tubes to clear the mud blockage, and installing a new torque converter (due to the stripped stator splines). The transmission was flushed, new filters were installed, and fresh JD Hy-Gard oil was added. Afterward, line pressure stabilized at 20 bar, the whining stopped, and First gear engaged firmly.
