Resolving “Slow Boom Raise And Engine Stalling On Lift” On A Cat 950M Wheel Loader

Sep 08, 2026

An aggregate processing facility reported that a Cat 950M wheel loader took 12 seconds to raise an empty boom (spec is 6 seconds). When the operator attempted to raise a full bucket of gravel, the engine RPM dropped drastically from 2200 to 1300 RPM, almost stalling the machine. The steering and drivetrain functions operated normally under load.

The technician first checked the main implement hydraulic pressure at the boom cylinder. The pressure spiked instantly to 350 bar (relief setting) as soon as the lever was moved, even before the boom began to move. This indicated a severe hydraulic blockage downstream of the pump.

He removed the "Main Control Valve" assembly and isolated the boom circuit. The Cat 950M uses a "Boom Lock Valve" (a pilot-operated check valve) that holds the boom in place to prevent accidental lowering. He disassembled the lock valve. The main poppet was jammed shut in its seat by a deformed Teflon backup ring that had extruded out of the adjacent cylinder port. Because the lock valve could not open, the hydraulic oil from the pump was physically blocked from entering the boom raise chamber.

The oil had nowhere to go, dead-heading against the valve. This forced the open-center hydraulic pump to push against maximum resistance, creating immense mechanical drag on the engine (causing the RPM drop and near-stall condition). The 350 bar pressure was simply the oil escaping through the system relief valve, which generated massive heat.

The repair involved extracting the jammed lock valve spool, cleaning the valve bore, and replacing the extruded Teflon seals with updated high-temperature Viton equivalents. The boom cylinder was inspected to ensure no metal debris from the jamming event had entered the cylinder. The hydraulic system was flushed, and fresh oil and filters were installed. After reassembly, the boom raised smoothly in 6 seconds, and the engine maintained full RPM under heavy bucket loads.
