The Dielectric Death Of Folded Rubber Insulating Gloves

Jun 03, 2026

In high-voltage electrical work, rubber insulating gloves (Class 00 to Class 4) are the only barrier between a lineman and a lethal electrocution. Workers are generally diligent about looking for cuts, punctures, or embedded metal slivers before putting them on. However, there is a silent, invisible killer of rubber gloves that occurs entirely off the job site: Mechanical Creasing.

When a worker finishes a long shift in the summer heat, their hands are sweating profusely. The easiest way to strip off tight rubber gloves is to grab the fingertips and yank them inside out. Then, to fit them into a cramped tool bucket, the worker crams them in, folding the thick rubber over on itself like an accordion.

Rubber is a polymer. When you fold it sharply, you create a severe stress line at the apex of the fold. Over time, the polymer chains at this crease become permanently elongated and weakened. The rubber at the fold thins out microscopically. When voltage is applied across this thinned, stressed crease, the dielectric strength is drastically reduced. The electricity can arc through the crease even though the glove looks perfectly intact. Furthermore, if the gloves were rolled up while damp with sweat, the trapped moisture inside the fold acts as a conductor, further lowering the dielectric threshold.

The Correct Storage Protocol: Never fold, crease, or stuff rubber insulating gloves. To remove them, pull them off by the cuff, right-side out. To store them, you must roll them. Start at the fingertips and roll the glove tightly toward the cuff, trapping a small pocket of air inside. This naturally expands the fingers and prevents any sharp folds. Store the rolled gloves in a canvas protective bag designed specifically for electrical gloves, which allows them to breathe and dry out. If you see a permanent white "stress line" or a crease in the rubber from past folding, the dielectric integrity is gone. Destroy the glove immediately.
