Jungheinrich Unveils Lithium-Ion Specific Reach Truck Design

Jun 27, 2026

Jungheinrich has launched a new series of reach trucks designed exclusively for lithium-ion batteries, breaking away from the "one-size-fits-all" chassis design that accommodated heavy lead-acid units. Traditional reach trucks require a massive counterweight battery to balance the load. This battery compartment is bulky and sits high in the chassis, obstructing the operator's view and widening the turning radius.

Because lithium-ion batteries are 40% lighter and more compact than lead-acid equivalents for the same energy output, Jungheinrich engineers were able to completely redesign the chassis. The battery pack is integrated low and centrally within the reach truck's frame. This lowers the center of gravity, allowing for a slimmer chassis design.

The narrower chassis allows the reach truck to operate in aisles that are 15% narrower than the industry standard, increasing warehouse storage density. Additionally, the removal of the bulky lead-acid battery box from the operator's eye line creates a clear view through the mast to the fork tips.

The "Li-Ion Specific" design also incorporates an active thermal management system. A liquid-cooling plate is integrated directly into the battery casing, connected to a high-efficiency radiator. This allows the reach truck to sustain high-speed lifting and travel cycles even in deep-freeze environments down to -30°C, where traditional lead-acid batteries lose capacity rapidly. By designing the vehicle around the battery chemistry rather than retrofitting it, Jungheinrich is setting a new standard for energy efficiency and space utilization in modern logistics.
