Terex Finlay Launches Hybrid Electric Jaw Crusher for Urban Demolition

Jun 30, 2026

Terex Finlay has unveiled the J-1175 Hybrid, a mobile jaw crusher engineered specifically for the noise and emission-sensitive environment of inner-city demolition and recycling. Traditional mobile crushers rely on a large diesel engine to directly drive the hydraulic pumps and the jaw crusher mechanism. This creates a constant, high-decibel drone that is often prohibited by city noise ordinances, forcing contractors to shut down operations early. The J-1175 Hybrid decouples the engine from the crusher drive.

The machine is powered by a smaller Stage V diesel engine connected to a switch-reluctance generator. This generator produces electricity to power electric motors that directly drive the jaw crusher, the feeder, and the main conveyor belts. The diesel engine runs at a constant, optimized RPM to generate power, rather than varying speed with the load, which significantly reduces fuel burn.

Crucially, the electric motors operate much quieter than a hydraulic drive system. The absence of hydraulic pumps whining under load drops the machine's operating sound level by nearly 10 decibels compared to its diesel-mechanical predecessor. Additionally, the electric jaw drive offers superior torque control; if an uncrushable piece of steel enters the chamber, the electric motor can instantly reverse the jaw rotation to clear the jam, preventing the engine from stalling. By prioritizing electric drive for the crushing functions, Terex Finlay is enabling contractors to work longer hours in dense urban zones without violating strict environmental regulations.
