Hyster-Yale has launched a new visibility system for its Hyster H1050-1150HD empty container handlers, designed to improve safety in congested port environments. Maneuvering a 40-foot container in tight rows creates massive blind spots. Traditional convex mirrors are often ineffective at night or in rain, and the container itself blocks the operator's view of cross-traffic at intersections.
The new system employs four high-dynamic-range (HDR) cameras mounted on the mast, the rear counterweight, and the sides of the chassis. These cameras feed into an onboard processor that stitches the images together in real-time to create a seamless "bird's-eye view" on a 10-inch monitor in the cab. Unlike standard backup cameras, this system operates at 60 frames per second to handle the rapid movements of port logistics.
The system features "predictive overlay" technology. As the operator turns the steering wheel, the monitor displays a projected path line for the container, allowing the operator to see exactly where the container corner will end up before making the turn. If the cameras detect a pedestrian or vehicle entering the handler's blind spot, the system triggers an audible alarm and highlights the threat zone on the screen in red. By eliminating the reliance on mirrors, which can vibrate or fog up, Hyster-Yale is significantly reducing low-speed collision accidents in high-traffic intermodal yards.
