Case Construction Equipment has introduced a software-enhanced "Heavy Lift" mode for its CX350D crawler excavator, targeting heavy infrastructure and deep foundation applications. In standard operation, an excavator's lifting capacity is often limited by the hydraulic system's ability to maintain stability and speed simultaneously. The new Heavy Lift mode alters the engine and hydraulic mapping to prioritize force over speed.
When activated via the console, the system reduces the engine RPM to a specific "torque peak" window while increasing the main pump's displacement. This creates higher hydraulic pressure at the cylinder rods, providing up to 12% more lifting force at critical lift radii. For example, lifting a 15-ton concrete barrier that might strain the machine in standard mode becomes stable and controlled in Heavy Lift mode.
Crucially, the system integrates with the machine's tilt rotator sensor. If the load begins to swing, the software automatically dampens the cylinder movements to stabilize the load, preventing the pendulum effect that can destabilize the tracks. This allows contractors to lift heavier prefabricated structures or use larger vibratory hammers for sheet piling without needing to rent a larger class of excavator, significantly reducing fleet costs.
