Bomag Introduces “AsPhalt” Technology for HD+ Series Tandem Rollers

Jul 08, 2026

Bomag has unveiled a new asymmetric drum design for its HD+ series tandem rollers, aimed at improving the surface quality of asphalt compaction. In traditional tandem rollers, the front steel drum is symmetrical. During sharp turns, the edge of the drum can shear or "shove" the fresh asphalt, creating surface defects that require rework. Bomag's "AsPhalt" technology utilizes a front drum with a chamfered edge on one side.

The system is linked to the roller's steering angle sensor. When the operator turns the steering wheel, the machine automatically adjusts the drum's contact pressure distribution. The chamfered edge reduces the cutting effect on the inside of the turn, allowing the drum to roll over the material rather than pushing it. This results in a smoother, ripple-free surface even during complex maneuvering.

Furthermore, the system includes a "SprayGuard" moisture management system. Over-watering is a common issue that cools the asphalt too quickly, leading to poor density. The new system uses moisture sensors on the drum surface to activate the water sprays only when the drum temperature rises above a set threshold, ensuring a thin, consistent water film that prevents pick-up without cooling the mat. This automation reduces water consumption by 20% and improves the final density results.
