Terex Cranes Launches “Smart Flex” Boom Technology for Aerial Work Platforms

Jul 10, 2026

Terex Cranes has introduced "Smart Flex" technology for its line of aerial work platforms (AWPs) and boom lifts. Traditional boom lifts have a fixed load chart based on the worst-case scenario stability. Smart Flex utilizes a network of sensors on the chassis, boom, and platform to calculate the machine's center of gravity in real-time. The system integrates a "Envelope Control" feature that automatically restricts the boom's range of motion if the load exceeds the safe limit for that specific configuration.

For example, if a worker places a heavy tool chest in the platform basket, the Smart Flex system recalculates the load chart instantly. Instead of simply shutting down the machine, it limits the boom's outreach to a safe radius while still allowing full height. This prevents tip-overs without completely halting productivity. Additionally, the system features a "Zone Limiting" function that can be programmed to avoid overhead power lines or fragile building facades. The operator can set a virtual "no-go" zone in the controller; if the boom approaches this virtual wall, the system automatically slows and stops the movement, protecting both the worker and the infrastructure.
