JLG Introduces “SkyGuard” Active Envelope Control for Boom Lifts

Jul 11, 2026

JLG has launched an upgrade to its flagship boom lift series with the "SkyGuard" Active Envelope Control system. In industrial facilities, boom lifts often navigate a maze of overhead pipes, cable trays, and steel structures. Traditional height sensors only measure vertical distance. SkyGuard integrates a 3D spatial awareness system that creates a "virtual envelope" around the platform. The operator can pre-program "exclusion zones" via a touch screen console-areas where the machine is forbidden to enter due to fragile equipment or high-voltage lines.

From an engineering perspective, the system relies on a combination of angle sensors on the boom sections and a highly sensitive load cell at the platform mount. The system continuously calculates the "Load Moment"-the product of the load weight and the radius from the machine's center of gravity. If the operator attempts to extend the boom beyond the safe working load limit, or if the load shifts unexpectedly (such as a worker leaning out with a heavy tool), the SkyGuard system instantly overrides the joystick command. It automatically retracts or lowers the boom to a safe position. Furthermore, the "Virtual Ceiling" feature allows facility managers to input the exact ceiling height of a factory. If the platform approaches this height, the boom automatically slows and stops, preventing impact with overhead cranes or ductwork, a common cause of severe structural damage and downtime.
