Toyota Material Handling has introduced a new active safety package for its 8FBE series electric reach trucks, targeting high-density warehousing where visibility is often obstructed by racking and inventory. Traditional safety systems rely on ultrasonic or infrared proximity sensors that only detect objects in a direct line of sight. Toyota's new "360 Spatial Awareness" system uses four solid-state LiDAR scanners mounted on the four corners of the chassis.
These scanners create a continuous 3D point cloud map of the environment. The system is programmed with two safety zones: a yellow "warning" zone and a red "critical" zone. If a pedestrian enters the yellow zone (e.g., 3 meters away), the system sounds an audible alarm and flashes an LED strip in the operator's peripheral vision. Crucially, it also gently applies regenerative braking to slow the truck by 50%, giving the operator time to react. If the pedestrian enters the red zone (1 meter), the system cuts power to the drive motor and applies full emergency braking.
A key engineering challenge was integrating the LiDAR data with the forklift's steering angle sensor. The system dynamically adjusts the safety zone shape based on the steering angle. If the truck is turning a corner, the "virtual bumper" expands in the direction of travel to cover the blind spot created by the mast. This software-defined safety zone allows the truck to operate at full speed in open aisles but automatically restricts it near intersections and doorways, balancing safety with productivity.
