Komatsu Unveils “Power-Sync” Hybrid Hydraulic System for New PC700LC-11 Excavator

Jul 18, 2026

Komatsu has officially launched the PC700LC-11, a 70-ton class mining excavator equipped with a groundbreaking "Power-Sync" hybrid hydraulic system. While hybrid technology is not new to the industry-Komatsu's own PC200 Hybrid pioneered capacitor-based storage-the Power-Sync system introduces a mechanical flywheel energy storage unit, marking a significant departure from battery-centric approaches.

The engineering philosophy behind Power-Sync is to address the "peaky" power demand of excavator digging cycles. In a standard hydraulic system, the engine must be sized to handle the absolute maximum load, which occurs only 15% of the time. During light digging or swinging, the engine runs inefficiently at low load. The Power-Sync system introduces a 500kg carbon-fiber composite flywheel housed in a vacuum chamber, spinning at up to 20,000 RPM. This flywheel is connected to the engine's power take-off (PTO) via a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

When the operator demands a sudden, high-torque lift of the boom, the hydraulic pumps place a massive load on the engine. The Power-Sync system instantly draws energy from the spinning flywheel, supplementing the engine torque by up to 30%. This allows the machine to use a smaller, more efficient engine that runs at a constant, optimized RPM, regardless of the hydraulic load fluctuations.

Crucially, the system features a "Regenerative Boom Lower" function. When the heavy boom is lowered, the hydraulic fluid pushes a motor that spins the flywheel, recharging the mechanical "battery." This process recovers over 85% of the potential energy, compared to the 30-40% recovery rates typical of electro-chemical batteries in similar applications. Field tests in Australian iron ore mines have shown a 22% reduction in fuel consumption per ton of material moved, significantly lowering the total cost of ownership for large-scale mining operators.
