Komatsu Introduces “Smart Construction” Drones for Site Surveying and Progress Monitoring

Komatsu has expanded its "Smart Construction" platform by integrating autonomous drone technology directly into the workflow of its civil engineering machinery. Traditionally, site grading requires surveyors to place physical stakes and lasers to guide operators. This process is slow and creates a safety hazard for workers on the ground. The new system utilizes a programmable drone that autonomously flies over the construction site. Using a high-resolution camera and LiDAR, the drone captures thousands of data points, generating a 3D topographical map in minutes.

This map is instantly uploaded to the Komatsu Cloud and downloaded to the monitors inside the cab of the excavator or dozer. The machine's onboard computer compares the "current terrain" (from the drone) with the "design terrain" (digital blueprints). The operator sees a color-coded heat map on the screen: red areas indicate where to cut, blue areas indicate where to fill.

From an engineering perspective, the key innovation is the "Dynamic Topology Update." If the excavator digs a trench, the system can request a quick, low-altitude drone pass to update the 3D model. This feedback loop allows the project manager to see the exact volume of earth moved in real-time, facilitating instant progress billing. Furthermore, the system features "Blind Spot Relief." The drone feeds a live video stream to the operator's monitor, providing a bird's-eye view of the machine's surroundings, effectively eliminating blind spots caused by the boom or large stockpiles, drastically reducing the risk of collision with personnel or other machines.
