Toyota Material Handling has launched a new 8FBE series 3-wheel electric counterbalance forklift, specifically engineered for high-density warehousing and cold-store logistics. Traditional 4-wheel forklifts require a wide turning aisle to maneuver pallets into racking. The new 3-wheel design consolidates the drive and steering functions into a single, large "drive unit" at the rear. This eliminates the rear axle beam, significantly shortening the wheelbase.
The engineering innovation lies in the "Dual-Arm Rear Suspension." The drive unit is mounted on a pivot bearing, allowing the rear wheel to turn 360 degrees without chassis interference. This allows the forklift to effectively spin within its own length (turning radius almost equals the machine length). The system uses two independent AC drive motors for the rear wheel, providing instantaneous torque vectoring.
Furthermore, the forklift features a "Smart-Swing" mast design. The mast is mounted further back on the chassis, shifting the center of gravity towards the rear. This allows the truck to carry the same capacity as a larger 4-wheel truck but in a smaller footprint. The 360-degree turning capability is particularly beneficial in trailer loading operations. The operator can drive straight into a trailer and then turn the rear wheels perpendicular to the chassis to "slide" sideways, aligning the forks with pallet slots without needing to reverse and correct the angle. This reduces the loading cycle time by 15% and prevents damage to trailer walls.
