Linde Material Handling Launches “Reflex-Steer” for Counterbalance Trucks

Linde Material Handling has introduced the "Reflex-Steer" system for its E20-E50 electric counterbalance forklift series. Traditional forklift steering uses a constant ratio: the rear wheels turn at a fixed rate relative to the steering wheel. However, this creates a safety conflict. At low speeds (maneuvering in tight aisles), the operator wants a "fast" steering ratio (quick turns). At high speeds (driving down long aisles), a fast ratio is dangerous-a small hand movement can cause the truck to veer sharply.

The Reflex-Steer system uses a "Steer-by-Wire" architecture. There is no mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the rear axle. A position sensor on the steering column sends a signal to a controller, which operates an electric motor on the rear axle.

The innovation is the "Speed-Adaptive Algorithm." When the forklift travels below 5 km/h, the system sets a "super-fast" ratio-turning the wheel 30 degrees turns the wheels fully. This allows the operator to spin the truck 180 degrees with minimal hand movement, maximizing agility. As the forklift accelerates above 10 km/h, the system automatically switches to a "safe" ratio-turning the wheel requires more revolutions to achieve the same wheel angle. This prevents over-correction at high speeds. Additionally, the system features a "One-Hand Mode" button. When activated, the steering wheel returns to the center position automatically after a turn, allowing the operator to operate the hydraulic levers with one hand while the other hand rests on the steering wheel. This reduces muscle strain by 40% during long shifts.
