Linde Material Handling Introduces “Dynamic Stability Control” for Heavy-Duty Counterbalance Trucks

Linde Material Handling has launched a new safety feature called "Dynamic Stability Control" (DSC) for its E60-E80 heavy-duty electric counterbalance forklifts. Large capacity forklifts often suffer from a "tail-wagging" effect when turning quickly with a load, causing the rear end to oscillate and potentially tip. The DSC system uses an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) mounted under the driver's seat.

The IMU measures the lateral acceleration (G-force) of the truck. When the driver turns the steering wheel rapidly, the system calculates the potential lateral force. If the force exceeds the safe limit for the current speed, the DSC intervenes in two ways. First, it sends a signal to the traction controller to gently reduce the motor speed (similar to electronic stability control in cars). Second, and more innovatively, it activates a "Hydraulic Oscillation Lock" cylinder on the rear axle.

Traditionally, the rear axle of a forklift is allowed to oscillate (pivot) to maintain contact with the ground on uneven surfaces. However, during a turn, this oscillation can amplify the tilt. The Linde DSC system hydraulically locks the rear axle to the chassis frame momentarily when cornering forces are high, effectively stabilizing the base. Once the steering wheel returns to center, the lock releases, allowing the axle to oscillate freely again for rough ground capability. This active logic provides the stability of a fixed-axle truck during turns while retaining the ground clearance of an oscillating axle on rough terrain, significantly reducing the risk of lateral tip-overs.
