XCMG has introduced a revolutionary "Smart-Steer" electronic steering system for its GR series motor graders. In high-precision road construction, maintaining a perfectly straight path is critical. Traditional hydraulic steering systems suffer from "shimmy" or drift, requiring the operator to constantly make micro-corrections, leading to operator fatigue and a "wavy" road surface.
The Smart-Steer system replaces the traditional mechanical steering column with a "Fly-by-Wire" joystick. The signal from the joystick is sent to an ECU that controls a high-response proportional valve on the front steering cylinders. The system uses a "Closed-Loop Feedback" architecture. A high-precision angle sensor on the front axle constantly monitors the wheel angle. If the system detects a deviation of more than 0.1 degrees from the operator's input (due to uneven ground resistance), the ECU instantly commands the valve to correct the steering.
A key feature is the "Active Anti-Shimmy" logic. Graders often operate at high speeds on soil. If the front wheels hit a stone, they can oscillate violently. The Smart-Steer system detects this high-frequency oscillation and automatically activates the steering cylinders to dampen the vibration, stabilizing the machine. Additionally, the system includes a "Bi-Directional Synchronization" mode. When grading in reverse, the system automatically mirrors the steering input, allowing the operator to grade backwards as accurately as forwards. This automation increases grading efficiency by 20% and reduces the need for rework due to surface undulations.
