Toyota Material Handling has introduced "Dynamic Reach Control" (DRC) for its 8FBE series 3-wheel electric forklifts designed for high-bay warehousing. As warehouses grow taller to maximize storage density, forklifts are required to lift loads to heights exceeding 12 meters. At these heights, even minor chassis tilt or mast oscillation can make placing pallets difficult and dangerous.
The DRC system combines a "Gyroscopic Stabilizer" with a "Fork Tip Laser Guide." The Gyroscopic Stabilizer is an active hydraulic cylinder mounted on the rear axle. It monitors the tilt of the chassis (roll and pitch) at 100 times per second. If the machine tilts due to a soft floor spot or braking inertia, the cylinder instantly extends or retracts to level the chassis, keeping the mast perfectly vertical.
The "Fork Tip Laser Guide" projects a visible red laser spot onto the racking beam from the fork carriage. This allows the operator to see exactly where the forks will land 12 meters above without guessing. Crucially, the system features "Automatic Fork Leveling." When the operator raises the forks, the system detects the weight on the forks and automatically adjusts the tilt cylinder to keep the forks horizontal. If the operator drives too fast with the mast elevated, the DRC system automatically reduces the travel speed and increases the steering stability, preventing the "wandering" effect common in high-lift operations.
