Sany Introduces “Ultra-Safe” Luffing Jib System for Urban Tower Cranes

Aug 03, 2026

Sany has launched an upgraded "Ultra-Safe" control system for its SCL900 luffing jib tower crane series. Luffing jib cranes are essential for urban high-rise construction where space is limited, but they face significant risks from load pendulum and collisions with obstacles like high-voltage lines or adjacent buildings.

The Ultra-Safe system integrates a "3D LiDAR Scanner" on the counterweight deck. This scanner creates a real-time point cloud of the surrounding environment, identifying obstacles (other cranes, buildings, power lines). The system automatically defines "Exclusion Zones" in the crane's working envelope. If the operator tries to luff the jib or slew into a prohibited zone, the control system overrides the joystick input and brings the crane to a controlled stop.

A key engineering feature is the "Load Moment Fusion." Traditional cranes rely on a pressure sensor on the hoisting cylinder to measure the load. This is slow and can be inaccurate at steep angles. The Sany system adds an "Angle Encoder" on the luffing cylinder. By measuring the cylinder extension length and the jib angle precisely, the system calculates the "Load Moment" with a latency of less than 20 milliseconds. This prevents "tipping" accidents caused by overloading. Additionally, the system includes a "Wind-Gust Suppression" mode. If the anemometer detects a sudden wind gust, the system automatically increases the current to the luffing and slewing motors, stiffening the crane's response to prevent the load from being blown into obstacles.
