Hangcha Group has released a new "Virtual-Rail" guidance system for its CPD series electric forklifts and aerial work platforms (AWPs). In modern automated warehouses, physical guide rails or magnetic strips are expensive to install and maintain. The Virtual-Rail system eliminates physical infrastructure by using "Sensor Fusion Navigation."
The system combines data from a "Laser Range Finder" (measuring distance to racks) and a "Visual Odometry Camera" (tracking floor texture). By fusing these two data streams, the forkluck calculates its position with an accuracy of ±10 mm. The system creates a "Virtual Path" in the warehouse management software.
When the operator drives the forklift, the system compares the actual position to the Virtual Path. If the forklift deviates from the path (e.g., drifting left), the system automatically applies a slight "Counter-Steer" correction to the rear axle motor. This keeps the forklift traveling perfectly straight without the operator constantly adjusting the steering wheel.
The key safety feature is "Pedestrian Vision." A camera on the fork carriage uses AI object detection to identify pedestrians. If a person steps into the forklift's path, the system triggers an immediate "Emergency Stop" before the operator can react. Additionally, the "Height-Speed Linkage" logic limits travel speed to 3 km/h when the mast is raised above 4 meters, ensuring stability. This system allows warehouses to achieve near-AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) precision with manual forklifts, bridging the gap between manual and fully automated logistics.
