Linde Material Handling Launches “Safety-Pilot” 360-Degree Warning System

Aug 06, 2026

Linde Material Handling has introduced the "Safety-Pilot" 360-degree warning system for its range of electric counterbalance forklifts. In busy logistics yards, forklifts often operate near pedestrians and other trucks. Traditional safety systems rely on mirrors or simple ultrasonic sensors, which have blind spots or trigger false alarms due to rain or dust.

The Safety-Pilot system combines four "Short-Range Radar" sensors (mounted in the fenders) with two "Wide-Angle Cameras" (mounted on the overhead guard). The system uses a "Sensor Fusion" algorithm to merge the data. The radar detects distance and velocity, while the camera identifies objects (classifying them as "person," "vehicle," or "obstacle").

The key innovation is the "Predictive Trajectory Warning." The system monitors the forklift's steering angle and speed. It projects the future path of the forklift 5 meters ahead. If a pedestrian enters this "predicted path" zone, the system triggers a "Level 2 Warning": the in-cab monitor highlights the person in red, and an audible alarm sounds. If the forklift continues to close in, the system triggers a "Level 3 Intervention": it cuts the traction motor power and applies the service brakes automatically.

Crucially, the system features "Smart Blind Spot Monitoring." When the mast is raised (blocking the driver's forward view), the system automatically prioritizes the front camera view on the dashboard. If the driver reverses, the system highlights the rear radar data. This intelligent filtering prevents information overload, ensuring the driver reacts instantly to genuine threats while ignoring harmless obstacles like walls or inventory.
