Hyster Develops “Lithium-Iron” Rapid Charge System for Cold-Storage Reach Trucks

Jul 25, 2026

Hyster-Yale Group has introduced a new "Lithium-Iron" (LiFePO4) rapid charge system specifically engineered for its N45DR reach trucks operating in cold storage warehouses. Traditional lead-acid batteries suffer severe capacity loss in sub-zero temperatures and require lengthy charging times. In a -30°C environment, a lead-acid battery may only deliver 60% of its rated capacity, necessitating frequent battery swaps and a dedicated, heated battery changing room.

The Hyster Lithium-Iron system features a "Active Thermal Management" loop. The battery pack is encased in a liquid-cooled jacket containing a non-toxic glycol solution. This system performs two functions: in the freezer, a small electric heater keeps the battery cells at an optimal 20°C for chemical efficiency; during fast charging, the coolant circulates to remove heat generated by internal resistance.

The core innovation is the "Flash Charge" capability. The truck is equipped with a 48V / 400A on-board charger interface. During a standard 15-minute driver break (opportunity charging), the truck can recover 25% of its capacity using a high-current DC fast charger. This is impossible with lead-acid batteries due to thermal runaway risks. The system eliminates the need for a battery changing room and spare batteries. A reach truck can now operate continuously across three shifts on a single battery pack, charging only during scheduled breaks. Furthermore, the battery management system (BMS) monitors individual cell voltages. If a cell unbalance is detected, the system uses active balancing circuits to equalize the charge, extending the battery cycle life to over 3,000 cycles-double the lifespan of standard lead-acid batteries in cold storage applications.
