Jungheinrich has unveiled a new navigation package for its ETV 216i reach truck series, designed to revolutionize operations in "Very Narrow Aisle" (VNA) warehouses. Traditionally, VNA trucks rely on either mechanical guide rails (in-floor rails) or wire guidance systems embedded in the concrete floor. Both methods are expensive to install and difficult to modify if the warehouse layout changes.
The new "Laser-Assist" system utilizes a combination of upward-facing LiDAR sensors and a ground-facing laser range finder. The upward sensors scan the pallet rack uprights (the vertical steel beams), creating a digital map of the aisle. The ground laser measures the distance to the racking base. This allows the truck to navigate the aisle with millimeter precision without any physical contact with the floor or walls.
From an engineering standpoint, the key innovation is the "Aisle-Keep" algorithm. The system constantly calculates the truck's deviation from the centerline. It then sends corrective signals to the rear-axle steering motor. If the truck drifts 5mm to the left due to a slightly uneven floor, the steering automatically adjusts to bring it back to the center. This active micro-correction eliminates the tire scrubbing that occurs when trucks run along mechanical guide rails, extending the life of the polyurethane drive tires by up to 40%.
Additionally, the system features "Height-Linked Speed Control." The laser range finder measures the distance to the rack level the operator is approaching. If the forks are at a height above 8 meters, the system automatically reduces travel speed to 3 km/h to maintain stability. If the operator approaches a rack at floor level, the system permits full speed (14 km/h). This dynamic safety layer allows warehouses to increase rack density by eliminating the wide safety margins previously required for manual steering errors.
