XCMG has introduced a revolutionary "Intelligent Steering" system on its new XE700GA large mining excavator, moving away from traditional mechanical steering columns. In conventional excavators, the steering wheel is connected via a series of universal joints and shafts to the hydraulic orbitrol valve. These mechanical components are prone to wear, require greasing, and transmit vibration directly to the operator's hands.
The XCMG Intelligent Steering system replaces this with a "Steer-by-Wire" architecture. A non-contact hall-effect sensor in the steering column detects the driver's input angle and speed. This signal is sent to an ECU, which controls a high-precision electro-hydraulic proportional valve mounted directly on the travel motor. This valve meters the pilot oil flow to the travel motor displacement control.
A key engineering advantage is the "Variable Steering Ratio." At low speeds (maneuvering in a tight pit), the system allows for a "fast" ratio-less than two turns of the wheel for full articulation. At high speeds (tramming on a haul road), the system switches to a "slow" ratio, providing finer control and preventing accidental over-steering. Additionally, the system features "Active Return." When the operator releases the wheel after a turn, the system automatically centers the travel motor mechanism, ensuring the tracks run straight without constant correction. This reduces cognitive load on the operator during long shifts and improves tire track life by eliminating constant micro-adjustments.
