Hamm has introduced its new "HCQ" (Hamm Compaction Quality) navigation system for the HD+ series of tandem vibratory rollers, expanding intelligent compaction technology from large road construction into the municipal and landscaping sectors. Traditionally, compaction quality on small job sites was verified by manual spot-checking using nuclear density gauges, a time-consuming process that left large areas unverified. The HCQ system democratizes this process by using a satellite-based positioning system in combination with an acceleration sensor on the drum.
The system provides the operator with a "heat map" directly on the display in the cab. As the roller passes over the ground, the screen color-codes the surface based on the stiffness detected by the drum. This allows the operator to see "soft spots" or uncompacted areas instantly, rather than discovering them after the asphalt is laid. A key engineering feature for the smaller rollers is the "Drum Edge Mode." In tight spaces like parking lots or bike paths, rollers often work close to curbs. The system uses high-precision sensors to monitor the edge of the drum relative to the curb. If the operator gets too close, the system automatically disables the vibration on one side of the drum, preventing the edge of the drum from striking and damaging the concrete curb. This integration of safety and quality control reduces rework costs and ensures uniform density across the entire site.
