Toyota Material Handling has introduced an upgraded version of its System of Active Stability (SAS) for its 8FBMT series electric counterbalance forklifts. While previous SAS systems focused on the mast and tilt angle, the new generation targets lateral stability during cornering. Electric forklifts often have higher acceleration and torque than internal combustion models, increasing the risk of rear-end swing.
The new system utilizes a yaw rate sensor and a steering angle sensor mounted on the rear axle. When the sensors detect that the operator is turning the steering wheel rapidly while the truck is moving at speed, the SAS controller instantly activates a "swing lock" cylinder. This cylinder mechanically restricts the oscillation of the rear axle, effectively widening the support base of the truck.
Simultaneously, the system overrides the hydraulic flow to the tilt cylinder, slowing down the mast's forward tilt speed to prevent the load's center of gravity from shifting outward. In field tests, the system reduced the risk of lateral tip-overs by 15% in high-speed slalom courses. This active intervention happens in milliseconds, often without the operator noticing, ensuring safety without compromising productivity.
