Wirtgen Launches “LEVEL PRO PLUS” for Milling Machines with Automated Slope Control

Jul 05, 2026

Wirtgen has upgraded its large milling machine series with the new "LEVEL PRO PLUS" automatic leveling system, designed to enhance precision in road rehabilitation projects. In traditional milling, achieving the correct cross-slope for water drainage relies heavily on the operator manually adjusting the machine based on string lines, a process prone to human error and weather delays.

The LEVEL PRO PLUS system utilizes up to four independent ultrasonic sensors mounted on the milling drum housing. These sensors scan the existing road surface or a reference string line 200 times per second. The system compares this data with the pre-set target values for depth and slope. If a deviation is detected, the system sends signals to the hydraulic lift cylinders to adjust the drum depth instantly.

A key engineering innovation is the "Slope Logic" algorithm. When milling on a curved road section, the system automatically interpolates the cross-slope transition from a flat crown to a banked curve, ensuring a smooth transition for vehicles. The system also features a "Auto-Scan" function: when the machine encounters a manhole cover or bridge expansion joint, the sensors detect the sudden change in surface height and automatically raise the drum slightly to avoid damaging the cutting tools, then lower it back to grade immediately after the obstacle. This automation reduces tool wear by 15% and eliminates the risk of over-cutting the sub-base.
