The Resonant Amplification Failure of Anti-Vibration Gloves

Jun 15, 2026

In jackhammer operations, chipping, and compacting, workers are exposed to severe hand-arm vibration, leading to Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS)-a permanent, debilitating condition causing blanching of the fingers, numbness, and tissue necrosis. To combat this, workers often wear standard work gloves with thick, open-cell foam padding in the palm, assuming more cushion equals more protection. Biodynamic analysis proves this assumption dangerously wrong; these gloves often cause Resonant Amplification, actually increasing the vibration energy transmitted into the hand.

The physics of vibration isolation dictate that a material only attenuates frequencies above its natural resonant frequency. Below that point, the material transmits the vibration; at the resonant frequency, it actually amplifies it. Standard open-cell polyurethane foam has a high dynamic stiffness and a resonant frequency that often falls directly within the operating range of heavy pneumatic tools (typically 50 to 150 Hz).

When a worker grips a jackhammer vibrating at 100 Hz, and the foam padding in the glove resonates at that same frequency, the foam acts as a mechanical speaker, amplifying the vibration amplitude into the worker's palm before transmitting it into the carpal tunnel and digital arteries. The cushion feels comfortable against static pressure, but dynamically, it is injecting more kinetic energy into the hand than if the worker gripped the tool bare-handed.

True anti-vibration (AV) gloves must conform to the ISO 10819 standard, which strictly measures the transmissibility of vibration through the glove material at medium (16-400 Hz) and high (100-1600 Hz) frequency ranges. To pass, a glove must incorporate Viscoelastic Polymers (like specialized gels or encapsulated air bladders) with a carefully engineered low dynamic stiffness. These materials lower the resonant frequency well below the tool's operating range, ensuring the vibration is damped, not amplified. If your AV gloves are just thick foam, you are accelerating nerve and vascular damage with every squeeze.
