A gravel pit operator reported that a Komatsu WA380-6 wheel loader would suddenly drop out of gear into "Neutral" while driving over rough terrain. The gear selector on the steering column would occasionally jump back to Neutral by itself.
The technician connected the "Dr. ZX" diagnostic tool. The transmission controller showed a fault code: "Shift Lever Position Signal Intermittent." He removed the "Shift Lever Assembly" (FNR switch). He tested the internal "Rotary Position Sensor" with a multimeter. The resistance values jittered erratically when the lever was in the Forward position.
Upon opening the sensor housing, he found water ingress. The cab's rubber boot around the steering column had cracked, allowing rainwater to drip directly onto the electronic position sensor. The water had caused "Galvanic Corrosion" on the carbon contact tracks, creating a high-resistance open circuit. When the machine hit a bump, the vibration temporarily broke the signal, causing the TCU (Transmission Control Unit) to default to Neutral for safety.
The repair involved replacing the entire shift lever assembly. The steering column rubber boot was replaced and sealed with silicone. The wiring harness connector was cleaned with contact cleaner and packed with dielectric grease to prevent future moisture ingress. After calibration of the new sensor, the loader held its gears firmly on rough roads.
