Forklift Industry Update: KION Unveils AI-Powered Autonomous Forklift at NVIDIA GTC 2026

Mar 24, 2026

KION Group, a global leader in industrial trucks and supply chain solutions, has made a significant breakthrough in the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the material handling industry by showcasing two innovative AI-driven solutions at the NVIDIA GTC 2026 conference held in San Jose, California. The highlight of the showcase was a fully autonomous forklift capable of performing complete transport tasks independently in real-world warehouse environments, marking a pivotal shift from simulation-based development to practical operational deployment.
The autonomous forklift, which has already been deployed at a GXO Logistics facility in Epinay-sur-Seine, France, is equipped with advanced AI cameras installed both on the vehicle and on the warehouse ceiling. These cameras enable the vehicle to accurately identify pallets, navigate complex warehouse layouts, and transport goods to designated locations without human intervention. A key feature of this technology is its ability to seamlessly collaborate with human-operated forklifts, ensuring smooth and safe operations in mixed environments where both automated and manual vehicles coexist. This capability addresses a critical challenge in warehouse automation and paves the way for a more flexible and efficient material handling ecosystem.
In addition to the autonomous forklift, KION also presented an innovative AI-based safety solution designed to detect and locate personnel and industrial vehicles within warehouse settings. This system leverages computer vision and machine learning algorithms to continuously monitor the warehouse environment, identify potential collision risks, and issue real-time alerts to both vehicle operators and pedestrians. By proactively preventing accidents, this technology significantly enhances workplace safety, a top priority in the material handling industry.
The deployment of these AI solutions at GXO's facility, which operates over 200 manually driven vehicles, serves as a real-world test case for the scalability and effectiveness of KION's AI technology. The successful implementation demonstrates that AI-driven automation can be integrated into existing warehouse operations without requiring a complete overhaul of infrastructure or workflows. This development aligns with the broader trend in the forklift industry toward intelligentization and electrification, as manufacturers increasingly invest in technologies to improve efficiency, safety, and sustainability. As AI continues to evolve, KION's innovations are expected to set a new benchmark for the industry and accelerate the adoption of smart, autonomous material handling solutions worldwide.
