Electric Forklift Adoption Skyrockets Amid Sustainability Push

Mar 27, 2026

The global forklift industry is undergoing a major shift toward electrification, with electric forklift sales surging to historic highs in 2026, overtaking internal combustion engine (ICE) forklifts in many key markets. Driven by strict carbon emission rules, rising fuel costs, and a growing focus on workplace safety and indoor air quality, warehouses, manufacturing plants, logistics centers, and distribution hubs are rapidly replacing gas and diesel forklifts with electric models. This transition is reshaping the entire forklift supply chain, from component manufacturing to end-user operation.

Recent industry reports show that electric forklifts accounted for over 62% of global new forklift sales in the first half of 2026, a jump of nearly 15 percentage points compared to three years ago. Lithium-ion battery technology has been the main driver of this growth, offering longer runtime, faster charging, longer lifespan, and lower maintenance needs than older lead-acid battery models. Modern electric forklifts can operate for a full shift on a single charge, with quick-charge options available for busy, round-the-clock operations, eliminating the downtime and inconvenience that once limited their use.

Indoor facilities, such as food processing plants, pharmaceutical warehouses, and retail distribution centers, are leading the adoption due to the zero-emission and low-noise benefits of electric forklifts, which create a safer and more comfortable work environment. Even outdoor logistics yards and construction sites are increasingly using electric forklifts, as battery and power technology improves to handle heavier loads and rougher terrain. Forklift manufacturers are expanding their electric product lines, offering models ranging from small pallet jacks to heavy-duty counterbalance forklifts capable of lifting several tons. Industry experts forecast that electric forklifts will dominate the global market by 2028, as sustainability becomes a core requirement for businesses worldwide.
