JCB 220X Excavator Combines X-Series Engineering, CommandPlus Cab, and LiveLink Telematics for 20-Ton-Class Productivity

Oct 23, 2026

JCB continues to position the 220X as the anchor of its X-Series tracked excavator range - a roughly 54,549-pound (24.7-ton) operating-weight machine powered by a 173-horsepower JCB Dieselmax diesel engine, delivering 21 feet 11 inches of maximum dig depth and 1.63 yd³ of operational bucket capacity. The 220X is built on a conventional tail-swing chassis that delivers the stability and lift capacity of a full-size excavator in a package suited to plant-hire fleets, heavy civil contracting, and general earthmoving where productivity per operating hour determines fleet profitability.

The machine's defining engineering feature is the "X-Series" architecture - JCB's most significant excavator development investment, built over four years of development and thousands of hours of extreme testing. The X-Series design incorporates 10 mm heavy-duty plates for both the upper and lower structure, providing the structural durability demanded by continuous heavy-duty work cycles, and is protected by a pleated radiator flyscreen and work light guards that extend component life in dusty and abrasive job-site environments. Combined with a "HD slew bearing seal" that extends slew-bearing life in dusty conditions, and an "innovative hydraulic regeneration system" that re-uses hydraulic flow during boom-lowering and arm-in-stroke cycles - delivering faster cycle times and reduced fuel consumption - the 220X delivers production-grade efficiency across the full spectrum of excavator duty cycles.

The 220X's operator environment centers on the "CommandPlus Cab" - JCB's sealed and pressurized operator compartment that offers seat-mounted controls, an 11-vent HVAC system for uniform climate distribution, and superior visibility through the cab's single-piece glass panels. Combined with "LiveLink" telematics for remote fleet monitoring, fuel-consumption tracking, and service scheduling, and the machine's IP69-consolidated fuseboard for simplified electrical diagnosis, the 220X provides fleet managers with the remote visibility required for multi-machine asset management. Combined with larger-diameter hydraulic pipework that boosts hydraulic efficiency, and JCB's documented use of automotive-quality materials and robot welding in the machine's fabrication, the 220X positions itself as a direct competitor to the Komatsu PC210, Caterpillar 320, Hitachi ZX210, and Volvo EC220E in the global 22-ton excavator segment.
