Caterpillar CB44B Tandem Vibratory Roller Extends Handwheel Steering and Eco-Mode Operation to the 7.5-Ton Compaction Class

Oct 21, 2026

Caterpillar continues to position the CB44B as the anchor of its 7-to-8-ton tandem vibratory roller range - a machine with 1,500 mm (59-inch) tandem vibratory drums, designed for asphalt paving, patching, granular base compaction, and general road-maintenance work where machine size allows access to confined job sites while still delivering production-class compaction output. The CB44B excels on a variety of asphalt mix designs as well as other granular materials, and is available in solid or split drum models that give contractors the flexibility to match the machine to specific paving requirements.

The machine's defining engineering feature is the "handwheel steering technology" - Caterpillar's control system that eliminates the traditional front steering console, giving the operator unobstructed visibility of the drum edges and the compaction surface. Combined with "touch-pad machine functions" that consolidate the operator's controls into an intuitive interface, "Eco-mode operation" that reduces engine speed and fuel consumption during light-duty compaction passes, and "automatic speed control" that maintains consistent travel speed across passes, the CB44B delivers a compaction workflow that reduces operator fatigue and improves productivity per shift.

The CB44B's "versatile vibratory systems" allow contractors to select from dual amplitude/dual frequency, dual amplitude/three frequency, or five-amplitude configurations - spanning the full range of thick and thin lift applications as well as varying paving speeds. The "split drum" option delivers superior mat quality and smooth performance when turning, making it the preferred choice for high-specification asphalt work where surface finish and joint quality are critical. Combined with "Cat Compaction Control" - which uses infrared temperature sensors combined with mapping to keep the operator informed of when optimal compaction temperatures exist and where compaction has already taken place - the CB44B provides production-grade compaction documentation in a compact machine class. Powered by a Cat C3.4B engine with ACERT Technology meeting U.S. EPA Tier 4 Interim and E.U. Stage IIIB emissions standards, and configurable with ROPS cab, non-ROPS cab, open platform, or sun canopy, the CB44B positions itself as a direct competitor to the Bomag BW 154, Hamm HD+ 90i, and Dynapac CC2200 in the global 7-to-8-ton tandem roller segment.
