Manitou Launches “Sky-Anchor” Dynamic Stability System for MRT Rotating Telehandlers

Aug 24, 2026

Manitou Group has released the "Sky-Anchor" dynamic stability system for its MRT 3260 rotating telehandlers. Rotating telehandlers combine the functions of a crane, a work platform, and a forklift, with a rotating turret and a boom extending up to 32 meters. At full horizontal reach with a 2.5-ton load, the overturning moment is enormous, and stability depends entirely on the chassis leveling and outrigger footing. Traditional machines require the operator to manually judge ground conditions under each outrigger pad-a judgment error that has caused numerous tip-over accidents, especially when one outrigger unknowingly rests on backfilled soil or a buried void.

The Sky-Anchor system places "Load Cells" in each of the four outrigger legs. The engineering core is the "Continuous Overturning Moment Calculation." The controller combines the boom angle sensor, boom extension sensor, turret rotation encoder, and hook load cell to compute the exact overturning moment vector every 20 milliseconds. It then compares this against the actual vertical forces measured at each outrigger. If the system detects that the force on the rear counterweight-side outrigger is approaching zero (the classic precursor to a backward tip-over), it does not merely alarm-it intervenes.

The "Automatic Boom Retraction Override" takes control of the boom proportional valves, smoothly retracting the boom at a controlled 2 m/min while simultaneously slewing the load back toward the machine centerline, bringing the moment back inside the safe envelope before the operator even completes their reaction. A second innovation is "Footing Pre-Load Monitoring." During setup, the system requires the operator to perform a "load test" where the system deliberately applies a simulated moment in each of four quadrants. If any outrigger leg sinks more than 15 mm into soft ground during the test, the machine refuses to enter full-capacity mode and displays the maximum permitted load chart derating. This proactive footing validation has reduced tip-over-related insurance claims in European rental fleets by 70% in the first year of deployment.
