XCMG Unveils “Fiber-Sense” Smart Hook Block for XCA100 All-Terrain Cranes

Aug 27, 2026

XCMG Heavy Industry has launched the "Fiber-Sense" smart monitoring system for its XCA100 100-ton all-terrain cranes. The most critical failure point in heavy lifting is wire rope degradation. Traditional crane load moment indicators (LMI) only measure the overall line tension; they cannot detect internal wire breaks or localized fatigue wear until the rope physically snaps. Periodic visual inspections are subjective and miss internal core corrosion.

The Fiber-Sense system embeds "Fiber Bragg Grating" (FBG) optical sensors directly into the sheave grooves of the crane hook block. As the wire rope passes over the sheave, the FBG sensor measures the micro-strain profile of the rope's surface at a frequency of 1000 Hz. The engineering innovation is the "Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) Vibration Analysis."

When a wire inside the rope breaks, it creates a microscopic "bump" or stiffness anomaly. As this anomaly passes over the rotating sheave, it generates a high-frequency strain ripple. The system's onboard processor analyzes the strain data using FFT algorithms to isolate this specific frequency signature. If the system detects a harmonic spike corresponding to a broken wire, it calculates the approximate location of the break (based on rope travel distance) and logs it.

Furthermore, the system features a "Dynamic Tension Vector Map." By placing FBG sensors on multiple sheaves, the system calculates the exact load vector and rope fleet angle in real-time. If the fleet angle exceeds the safe limit (which causes rope scrubbing and accelerated wear), the system limits the boom telescoping speed to prevent damage. This optical monitoring allows non-destructive rope testing during live operations, extending rope replacement intervals by 15% while preventing sudden rope failures.
