Bell Equipment has launched the "Terrain-Adapt" intelligent suspension system for its B60E series 55-ton Articulated Dump Trucks (ADTs). In off-highway mining, ADTs traditionally use rigid walking beam axles. While excellent for articulation, rigid axles struggle on highly uneven, jagged rock floors. When one wheel drops into a deep pothole, the entire truck chassis rolls, shifting the center of gravity and forcing the operator to crawl at 3 km/h to prevent a tip-over.
The Terrain-Adapt system replaces the rigid axles with "Independent Hydro-Pneumatic Suspension Struts" on all six wheels. The engineering innovation is the "Dynamic Load Transfer Logic." The system monitors the suspension stroke position and hydraulic pressure at each strut. If the truck enters a sharp right-hand turn while climbing a steep grade, the system actively pumps hydraulic oil from the left (inside) struts to the right (outside) struts. This dynamically increases the suspension stiffness on the outside, preventing body roll and keeping the payload bed perfectly level.
Furthermore, the system features "Traction Predictor Logic." If the system detects a front wheel dropping rapidly (indicating a void under the tire), it instantly relieves the hydraulic pressure on that strut, extending it to the ground to maintain contact. Simultaneously, it commands the inter-axle and cross-axle differential locks to engage *before* the wheel starts to slip and dig a hole. This predictive traction control allows the B60E to maintain 18 km/h on rough muck floors where traditional ADTs are limited to 5 km/h, reducing cycle times and preventing tire sidewall damage from spinning.
