Kalmar Equips FastCharge AutoStraddle Carriers with “Vision-Dock” Collision Mitigation System

Sep 01, 2026

Kalmar has launched the "Vision-Dock" precision container handling system for its FastCharge automated straddle carriers. In automated container terminals, the most frequent cause of equipment damage and downtime is not travel speed, but the final 50 cm of container engagement. AutoStraddles weighing 70 tons often misalign by just a few centimeters when lowering the spreader over a container, causing the twist-locks to violently strike the container corner castings. This damages the spreader structure, bends the twist-locks, and triggers abortive lift faults.

The Vision-Dock system attacks this micro-alignment challenge. The engineering core is a "360-Degree Stereo Vision Array" integrated into the four corners of the spreader beam. These cameras provide a real-time, three-dimensional point cloud of the container corner castings relative to the spreader's twist-locks.

Instead of relying purely on RTK-GNSS for final positioning (which has a 2-3 cm margin of error), the system uses "Predictive Trajectory Steering." As the straddle drives over the container, the ECU calculates the exact lateral and longitudinal deviation. It makes continuous micro-adjustments to the steering angles of the 8 wheels, crabbing the massive machine into perfect alignment. The final breakthrough is the "Force-Sensing Twist-Lock Mechanism." The lower section of each twist-lock is fitted with a load cell. As the spreader descends, if a twist-lock makes physical contact with the container casting (misalignment), the load cell detects a 50 kg upward force and instantly halts the lowering winch within 0.05 seconds-before structural damage occurs. The system then initiates a micro-leveling adjustment of the spreader to guide the twist-locks into the castings without friction. This vision and force-coupled docking eliminates spreader repair costs and increases automated terminal lift success rates to 99.9%.
