Manitowoc Cranes has introduced the "Lift-Sync" intelligent load control system for its Grove GRT765 65-ton rough terrain cranes. In shipping yards and steel distribution centers, RT cranes frequently lift heavy loads in open areas exposed to sudden wind gusts. When a wind gust hits a suspended load, it initiates a pendulum swing that the operator must manually counteract by slewing or booming in the opposite direction-a skill that takes years to master and is highly subjective. Uncontrolled load swing can strike adjacent structures or cause the crane to tip over.
The Lift-Sync system integrates a "6-Axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU)" directly onto the hook block, transmitting real-time angular velocity and acceleration data to the crane's ECU via a wireless mesh network. The engineering innovation is the "Pendulum Trajectory Prediction Model." The system's microprocessor calculates the exact angular momentum of the suspended load. Instead of passively waiting for the load to reach the apex of its swing, the system preemptively commands the crane's proportional slew valve to make a micro-counter-rotation. By moving the crane's boom tip in the opposite direction of the load's momentum vector at the precise millisecond, the system actively cancels the kinetic energy of the swing, bringing the load to a dead stop relative to the ground in under 2 seconds.
Furthermore, the system features a "Wind-Shear Lockout." If the hook block IMU detects a sudden lateral acceleration spike that exceeds the mathematical profile of a normal operator-induced swing (indicating a wind gust), the system immediately locks out all boom-down and slew commands. It forces the operator to boom up, raising the load out of the wind shear zone. This predictive sway control has reduced cargo handling times by 18% and eliminated load-swing collisions in pilot deployments.
