Toyota Material Handling Introduces 22 New Electric Models in Historic Product Launch, Anchored by 80V Electric Pneumatic Trucks and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Platform

Sep 10, 2026

Toyota Material Handling (TMH) introduced 22 new electric models in what the company called a historic product launch. The expanded lineup includes four different operator compartments; 24V, 36V and 48V models; a Multidirectional model for handling long loads in narrow aisles; High-Capacity models with a maximum fork height of 45 feet; and three Moving Mast Reach Truck models for unique applications such as cold storage and indoor/outdoor use. The launch also added a Low Level Order Picker, a Furniture Order Picker, an Enclosed End Rider, and a Stand-Up Rider pallet jack. The centerpiece of the launch is the 80V Electric Pneumatic forklift series, available in capacities from 5,000 to 17,500 pounds, combining strength and versatility for outdoor applications traditionally served by diesel trucks.

The engineering breakthrough is the 80V electric pneumatic architecture's thermal management. Outdoor pneumatic forklifts operate in ambient temperatures up to 45°C and are often subjected to continuous heavy-load cycling that generates high motor and controller heat. The 80V system uses a dual-loop liquid cooling circuit: the traction motor and the hydraulic pump motor are each cooled by a separate coolant loop with its own radiator, rather than sharing a single loop. This decoupling prevents heat transfer from the high-current hydraulic motor (which spikes during a lift) into the traction motor (which sustains continuous current during travel), eliminating the thermal deration that previously cut travel speed by 30% after 20 minutes of heavy use.

Toyota also advanced its hydrogen fuel cell platform, targeting the high-capacity segment. Fuel cell forklifts combine the sustainability of an electric truck with the practicality and short refueling time of an internal combustion engine. The fuel cell stack charges an onboard lithium-ion buffer battery that powers the electric motors and hydraulic systems. The breakthrough is the "Hybrid Charge Blending" logic: the fuel cell provides a steady-state base load current, while the buffer battery absorbs the peak current spikes during simultaneous travel-and-lift operations. This narrow fuel-cell load envelope extends the stack's membrane life to 20,000 operating hours, addressing the durability concern that has historically limited fuel cell adoption in heavy-duty forklift fleets. TMH's Vision 2030 carbon-reduction goal positions this electric and hydrogen platform to address the growing demand for durable, reliable, energy-efficient products across all applications and environments.
