Sandvik Launches “Air-Cycle” Smart Ventilation Management for LH625i Underground Loaders

Sep 12, 2026

Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology has integrated the "Air-Cycle" smart ventilation management system into its LH625i 25-ton underground loaders (LHDs). In deep underground mining, Tier 4 Final diesel engines equipped with Diesel Oxidation Catalysts (DOCs) generate immense exhaust heat. To dilute exhaust gases and prevent the DOC from overheating, mines must run massive surface ventilation fans continuously, consuming up to 40% of the mine's total electrical power. Traditional LHDs operate at full throttle regardless of the airflow available in the drift, often causing the DOC to enter thermal deration, shutting down the machine.

The Air-Cycle system pairs a "Forward-Looking Inclinometer" with an "Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Tracker." The engineering innovation is the "Slope-Predictive Engine Deration" logic. The system knows the machine's location and the topography of the mine's digital map. As the LHD approaches an uphill steep grade where the engine will be under high load, the system checks the current drift airflow via the mine's ventilation-on-demand network. If the airflow is marginal, the system preemptively limits the engine fueling rate, capping the exhaust temperature before the DOC enters thermal distress.

Furthermore, the system features "Active Bypass Valve Control." If the EGT spikes rapidly during a heavy muck-pile penetration, the system opens an electronic bypass valve on the exhaust stack, routing the hot exhaust gas directly into a water-jacketed cooling plenum on the machine chassis. This drops the exhaust gas temperature by 150°C before it enters the DOC, preventing catalyst meltdown and allowing the engine to maintain full power without triggering a thermal shutdown. This smart thermal and airflow coupling reduces the mine's required ventilation air volume by 35%, significantly lowering energy costs while maximizing loader uptime.
