Epirot Introduces “Smart-Strike” Hydraulic Breaker with Acoustic Steel Stress-Fracture Detection

Sep 14, 2026

Epiroc has unveiled the "Smart-Strike" intelligent energy management system for its 2026 generation of heavy hydraulic breakers, targeting the SB 1500 series used on 40-ton to 50-ton excavators. In primary rock breaking and secondary concrete demolition, the most destructive event for a breaker is a "blank fire"-when the operator fires the breaker piston without the tool pin firmly seated against a solid rock surface. The impact energy, having nowhere to go, rebounds into the breaker body, destroying the internal piston, the retaining pins, and the diaphragm.

The Smart-Strike system integrates a "Piezoelectric Stress Sensor" in the breaker's lower tool bushing. The engineering innovation is the "Engagement Verification Logic." Before the breaker's main valve allows high-pressure oil to drive the piston forward, the piezoelectric sensor must detect a compressive stress wave reflecting back from the tool pin. This stress wave confirms that the tool is physically loaded against the rock.

If the operator pulls the trigger while the breaker is hovering in the air or resting on soft dirt (no stress reflection), the Smart-Strike controller instantly solenoid-dumps the pilot pressure, arresting the piston in mid-stroke within 3 milliseconds. Furthermore, the system features "Hard-Rock Auto-Power." If the sensor detects an extremely high-amplitude stress wave (indicating the tool is seated against solid granite), the ECU commands the excavator's hydraulic system to increase the breaker's nitrogen accumulator charge and line pressure, delivering maximum impact energy. If the tool is seated against soft, fractured rock, the system reduces the impact frequency to prevent the tool from sinking and getting stuck. This predictive strike management reduces breaker repair costs by 45% and eliminates the catastrophic blank-fire failures that cause days of unplanned downtime.
