Sandvik Launches “Tunnel-Nav” Autonomous Tramming and Collision Avoidance for LH514i Underground Loaders

Sep 16, 2026

Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology has introduced the "Tunnel-Nav" intelligent guidance system for its LH514i 14-ton underground loaders (LHDs). In deep-level hard-rock mining, visibility is perpetually zero due to dust, darkness, and tight drift geometries. When two LHDs operate in the same decline, the risk of head-on collisions is extreme. Traditional automation relies on physical transponders buried in the tunnel walls, which are frequently destroyed by blasting vibrations or misaligned by floor heaving.

The Tunnel-Nav system integrates a "360-Degree Solid-State LiDAR Array" and an onboard Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) into the LHD's front chassis. The engineering breakthrough is the "Continuous Tunnel Topology Mapping." As the LHD trams through the decline, the LiDAR scans the tunnel walls, floor, and roof 20 times per second, generating a real-time 3D point cloud. The system does not need pre-mapped waypoints; it recognizes the tunnel's natural contours and curvature to steer the machine autonomously.

Furthermore, the system features "Dynamic Refuge-Bay Pairing." When the LiDAR detects a cross-cut or a widened refuge bay, the system logs its exact spatial coordinates. If the onboard radar detects an oncoming machine's headlights or laser reflection, the ECU calculates which LHD is closer to a refuge bay. It automatically diverts the closest machine into the bay, halts it, and flashes the strobe lights to allow the oncoming machine to pass safely in the narrow drift. This autonomous tramming and spatial awareness allows LHDs to operate continuously through shift changes and blasting re-entry periods without human risk, increasing underground productivity by 25%.
